TIKI MUD/CAT ROOM
7/18/2022
When I first set out to transform this space into a mudroom/catroom, my inspiration came straight from two of my favorite Disneyland attractions: the Enchanted Tiki Room and the Jungle Cruise. I wanted it to feel playful, lush, and just a little bit adventurous—like stepping into a tropical hideaway right out of Adventureland. The funny thing is, when the wallpaper and vibrant colors first arrived, I hated them. They weren’t my usual go-to (black everything), and returning them wasn’t an option. So, I decided to fully embrace the tropical chaos—and I’m so glad I did.

To bring in some Disney magic, I pulled details directly from the rides. The pillows and artwork feature the names of the famous Tiki Room birds, while a hand-painted “Tropical Imports” sign nods to the one above the Jungle Cruise queue. Of course, I couldn’t resist including a tribute to the famous Dole Whip, so I created a hand-painted Dole sign for the space. The bench and cubbies started as basic IKEA pieces, but I added reclaimed wood for a rustic, weathered feel that fit the jungle theme perfectly.

I wanted the room to feel layered with personality, so I used what I already had on hand: real vintage lanterns, old oil drums, and other quirky finds. The planters were made by cutting crates in half and filling them with lush faux ferns for that jungle-overgrown vibe. Every piece tells part of the story, and together, it feels like a little corner of Disneyland tucked right into my home—a place where the cats can lounge, boots can be stored, and adventure is always just around the corner.
